Treatment

The ESCAPE trial demonstrated that Endovascular Therapy (EVT) halves the death rate from major ischemic strokes and increased positive outcomes by 25%. The procedure, EVT, involves mechanical clot disruption (embolectomy) carried out by neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, or neurologists with neurointerventional expertise. The treatment will be available for patients who received IV thrombolysis and those with contraindications to thrombolysis whose clinical characteristics, brain and vascular imaging will qualify them for ET. An essential element to offering this therapy is for patients to have access to centres capable of providing EVT within 6 hours of stroke symptom onset.

CorHealth Ontario has provided recommendations and resources for the treatment phase involving the referring site, EVT centre.
